John Forman - The Essentials of Trading author

The advances in technology these days are making education – the sharing of information, knowledge, and experience - so much easier, more enjoyable, and more rewarding for both teacher and student.

In the trading and investing arena, as in many others, books have long been the primary vehicle of information sharing. Of course, there are also seminars and classes. In recent years CDs and DVDs have taken the middle ground between the distance and impersonal nature of text and the in-person (and significantly more expensive) presentations.

With the wider use of broadband and other high speed alternatives for internet access, the methods of distribution of information a rapidly growing. That means the opportunities for learning are taking some outstanding leaps forward. It also means that we can share not just knowledge and information, but a bit of ourselves, that much more readily.

For example, yesterday I recorded a quick video on how I use the Average True Range indicator in my market analysis. It didn’t take that long and now I can share it via the internet with people all over the world (click here to check it out if you’re interested). I’m not claiming it to be any kind of awesome work of cinematography. It does, though, serve the purpose – sharing information and experience in a more personal way than some static piece of text.

When I wrote my book, The Essentials of Trading, I very much pursued the traditional path of publishing. And the courses that I taught in which lead to the development of the book were very much standard university classes. Now I, and so many others, have the opportunity to go way beyond what’s been commonplace. The ability to quickly and easily produce video and audio and rapidly distribute it over the internet (and in other ways) is changing the educational landscape.

I’m excited at the opportunities, and what the future is going to bring!
